Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Scr[ipsit] Novr. 24, 1796,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s & Xt Church, [Baltimore,] Nov. 12, [17]97. (sic) Xt Ch & St Paul’s,<br />

[Baltimore,] Sep. 8: [18]05.” The last page <strong>of</strong> the sermon contains a list <strong>of</strong> baptisms<br />

to be recorded in the parish register.<br />

Bend also noted on the front cover, “When you meet with the figures 1, 2, 3, &c,<br />

they denote, that the clauses or sentences, to which they are affixed, are to be read<br />

in that order.” Page 32 <strong>of</strong> the sermon is written inside the front cover, followed by<br />

pages 33 & 34 before the beginning <strong>of</strong> the sermon. A loose sheet (two unnumbered<br />

pages) was inserted between pages 6 & 7; this insert shows material and a footnote<br />
