[probably “visitation <strong>of</strong> Bishop Thomas Claggett,” as correspondence shows that<br />

a visit was contemplated at about that time, and the Convention <strong>of</strong> the Diocese<br />

met in St. Paul’s, Baltimore, May 20, 1812.] Presumably Bend thought particularly<br />

well <strong>of</strong> this sermon, since he preached it when he was away in New Jersey and<br />

apparently before Bishop Claggett and others who assembled for the Diocesan<br />

Convention in 1812. The sermon ends with an appeal to partake worthily <strong>of</strong> Holy<br />

Communion as a means <strong>of</strong> receiving the Holy Spirit’s grace. Page 30 <strong>of</strong> the sermon<br />

is written inside the front cover.<br />
