before I die. Remove far from me vanity & lies; give me neither poverty nor riches,<br />

feed me with food convenient for me; lest I be full & deny thee, & say, who is the<br />

Lord? or lest I be poor & take the name <strong>of</strong> my God in vain.<br />

Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Fin[ished] June 27, 1795,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s, B[altimore], P M, July 26, /95. Xt Ch & St Paul’s, [Baltimore] June 30,<br />

1805.” The cover <strong>of</strong> the sermon has been sewn on upside down and backwards, so<br />

the concluding phrase, on page 29, is at the bottom <strong>of</strong> the inside front cover. This<br />

is one <strong>of</strong> several sermons <strong>of</strong> this period showing Bend’s attitude toward wealth<br />

and poverty, virtue, and the work ethic. One passage decries voluntary poverty for<br />

the sake <strong>of</strong> religion. The last page <strong>of</strong> the sermon contains a list <strong>of</strong> baptisms and a<br />

wedding to be recorded in the parish register. The last two words <strong>of</strong> the biblical<br />

passage, “& steal,” were struck out by Bend.<br />

Advent sermon.<br />
