Commentary: The sermon is incomplete. Present is the conclusion <strong>of</strong> a sermon<br />

preached at the consecration <strong>of</strong> St. Peter’s Church, New York, November 4, 1786.<br />

Printed in Hanley, III, 461-462. Carroll, a native <strong>of</strong> Maryland, was a Jesuit until the<br />

suppression in 1773. He served in Maryland from 1774 until his death, becoming<br />

successively the first bishop (1789) and first archbishop (1811) <strong>of</strong> the Catholic<br />

Church in the United States.<br />
