Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Fin[ished] Decr 31, 1795,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s, B[altimore], Jan. 1, 1796. [The same] Mar 4, 1798, with allusions to<br />

the death <strong>of</strong> Mrs Holmes; & without those allusions, in the afternoon, in Christ<br />

Church, Bo. [Baltimore]. [Juliana, wife <strong>of</strong> John Holmes, was buried 1 March<br />

1798]. Preached in St Paul’s, B[altimore], Jan. 1, 1800. Xt ch, [Baltimore, Jan. 1,<br />

18]12.” A note by Bend on page 29 states, “The last paragraph was not delivered<br />

on 4th March 1798.” Underlinings for emphasis appear throughout the sermon.<br />

Remarks concerning the death <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Holmes apparently followed the penultimate<br />

paragraph and began with the words, “There is.” No stray insert beginning with<br />

these words has been found thus far in cataloging.<br />
