This bibliography is in the best sense preliminary, since new man-<br />

uscript sermons continue to move from private into public hands,<br />

from families to archives. The use <strong>of</strong> new and emerging electronic<br />

investigative tools will certainly uncover new materials and allow<br />

the updating and expansion <strong>of</strong> those entries already recorded. That<br />

is why this volume is also available as a database, one constructed as<br />

a dynamic platform to encourage research that will in turn allow for<br />

the ongoing growth and improvement <strong>of</strong> the information it makes<br />

available.<br />

c) Data recorded in the Bibliographic Entries<br />

The bibliography seeks to represent the sermon data as accurately<br />

as possible and to this end does not correct original spelling, gram-<br />

mar, punctuation, etc., or expand abbreviations unless necessary for<br />

clarity. All the manuscripts thus far uncovered are written in Eng-<br />

lish. Quotations from languages other than English, such as Latin,<br />

are similarly retained, but translated when necessary. Clarifica-<br />

tions, translations, and other editorial comments are noted within<br />

square brackets. Due to the amount <strong>of</strong> time that has elapsed over<br />

the gathering <strong>of</strong> all the data and the wide diversity <strong>of</strong> content <strong>of</strong> the<br />

manuscripts themselves, as well again as the limitations <strong>of</strong> time and<br />

funding, some entries will bear significantly more information than<br />

others.<br />

d) Format <strong>of</strong> Entries<br />

Each entry in this bibliography is presented in two paragraphs. The<br />

first paragraph begins with a bold-faced entry number. This is the
