Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Fin[ished] June 6, 1795,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s, B[altimore], P M, June 21, [17]95. Xt Ch. & St Paul’s, [Baltimore] Aug<br />

26, [18]04.” This sermon contains a comprehensive statement <strong>of</strong> Bend’s Federalist<br />

views on the inequalities in society, the distribution <strong>of</strong> wealth, the evils <strong>of</strong> leveling<br />

distinctions between rich and poor, the duties <strong>of</strong> the rich and the poor, the evils<br />

<strong>of</strong> extremes, and the need <strong>of</strong> charity. An unnumbered four-page addition about<br />

Baltimore charities, the proposed School <strong>of</strong> Industry and the meeting to support it<br />

was later inserted near the end <strong>of</strong> the sermon.<br />

is unimpaired. The numerous abbreviations may suggest haste in preparation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sermon. In this sermon, Bend urges moderation in political and religious disputes.<br />
