Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Scr[ipsit] May 26, 1796,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s, B[altimore] A M, May 29, 1796. [St. Paul’s] & Xt Ch [, Baltimore],<br />

Je [June] 5, 1808.” Bend noted on the front cover that the sermon was for<br />

“Whitsunday.” This sermon is written on larger paper and in a larger handwriting<br />

than the other sermons <strong>of</strong> this period, but it is in Bend’s handwriting. At the bottom<br />

<strong>of</strong> page 25 is a pencilled addition inviting the congregation to holy communion.<br />

Pages 18-23 contain a plea for Christian unity. The last page <strong>of</strong> the sermon contains<br />

a list <strong>of</strong> baptisms to be recorded in the parish register.<br />
