Bib. Ref.: Psalm 97, V 1. “The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude<br />

<strong>of</strong> isles be glad there<strong>of</strong>.”<br />

Commentary: A note on the cover reads “Fin[ished] Aug 15th, [17]91.” Bend,<br />

reportedly and evidently methodical, omitted any note that this sermon was<br />

delivered. It also shows no signs <strong>of</strong> wear. Sermons written about this time <strong>of</strong><br />

change, when Bend was called to St. Paul’s, Baltimore, were probably more hastily<br />

written and less satisfactory to him.<br />

Nelson, Ball, Woodville, Iredell, Butler & Sykes. [Revs. Anthony Walke, Peter<br />

Nelson, David Ball, John Woodville, record <strong>of</strong> Iredell not found, Samuel Butler,<br />

and Stephen Sykes. John Judah was also ordained at this time, and perhaps Bend<br />

meant him, instead <strong>of</strong> Iredell.] in d’o [ditto Philadelphia, by Bp. White, Dec. 19,<br />

1788] a second time, at the ordination <strong>of</strong> Messrs Weems, Rigg, & Henderson [Revs.<br />

Elisha Rigg, James Henderson, deacons, and, presumably, Rev. John Weems as<br />

priest, (deacon June 24, 1787)]. at St John’s, Broad-creek, [parish church <strong>of</strong> King<br />

George’s Parish, Prince George’s County, Maryland], at ordination <strong>of</strong> Rev. Mr.<br />

Found loose in this sermon are two inserts, apparently alternative or supplemental<br />

endings to the sermon on smaller sized paper, with no dates. One <strong>of</strong> these inserts,<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> one small sheet (1 + 1 blank pp.), is on the many things that are lawful<br />
