Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Fin[ished] Mar. 23. [17]97,” and “Preached<br />

in St Paul’s, B[altimore] A M, Decr. 8, 1799. (sic) Xt Church, [Baltimore, Dec.]<br />

15, [1799].” This sermon begins inside the front cover instead <strong>of</strong> on the opposite<br />

page as usual. The hinge <strong>of</strong> the cover is frayed, but the words on pages 1 and 30<br />

are unimpaired by two small holes. This is the third <strong>of</strong> three sermon on education<br />

written in “early 1797.” The first <strong>of</strong> these sermons is missing. The second sermon on<br />

education is accession number 2099. The last page <strong>of</strong> the sermon contains a list <strong>of</strong><br />

baptisms to be recorded in the parish register.<br />

list <strong>of</strong> baptisms to be recorded in the parish register. In this sermon, Bend discusses<br />

his views that property rights are ordained and distributed by God, and applies the<br />

eighth commandment to economic, social, and political activities. This is one <strong>of</strong> a<br />

group <strong>of</strong> seven sermons on the ten commandments (see accession numbers 2000,<br />

2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009).<br />
