St Paul’s, B[altimore], A M, Mar. 15, [17]95. [St. Paul’s] & Xt Ch, [Baltimore,] Sep.<br />

5, 1802. Xt ch, [Baltimore] at night, Mar 10, [18]11.” As so <strong>of</strong>ten in the Federalist<br />

Bend’s sermons, the text is partly applied to political and social duties such as<br />

obeying laws, promoting the public good, and avoiding the spread <strong>of</strong> discontent<br />

and anarchy. The words, “neither be thou foolish. Why shouldst thou die before the<br />

time,” which originally followed the words “Be not overmuch wicked,” were later<br />

struck out <strong>of</strong> the biblical text by Bend.<br />

Aug. 2, [18]12.” Page 30 <strong>of</strong> the sermon is written inside the back cover. The sermon<br />

ends with an exhortation to partake frequently <strong>of</strong> the Lord’s Supper as an aid in<br />

well-doing and a means <strong>of</strong> obtaining grace.<br />

the parish register. This is one <strong>of</strong> the sermons in which Bend made extensive use <strong>of</strong><br />

underlining for emphasis in delivery. Page 30, the conclusion, is written inside the<br />

front cover. The sermon ends with an exhortation to partake <strong>of</strong> communion.<br />
