The places preached show that Bend was pleased with the sermon and must have<br />

considered it among his best or most important. The bottom <strong>of</strong> the front cover, with<br />

page 30 on the reverse side, is worn and frayed, so that the last line <strong>of</strong> the sermon is<br />

lost. An insert <strong>of</strong> eight unnumbered pages, probably <strong>of</strong> a later date than the original<br />

sermon, urges the partaking <strong>of</strong> Communion as a means <strong>of</strong> attaining grace. The last<br />

page <strong>of</strong> the sermon contains a list <strong>of</strong> baptisms to be recorded in the parish register.<br />

Commentary: Notes on the cover read “Scr[ipsit] Mar 6, 1794,” and “Preached in<br />

St Paul’s, B[altimore] A M, Mar. 9, 1794. Xt Chh. [Baltimore] Oct 23, 1803, with<br />

necessary alterations.” The 16th Canon <strong>of</strong> the Canons, for the Government <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Protestant Episcopal Church in Maryland (1793), states: “A Sermon shall be annually<br />

preached in the several Parishes <strong>of</strong> this State, and a Collection made for the<br />

Purpose <strong>of</strong> raising a Fund for defraying the Expenses incurred by the Bishop in the<br />

Discharge <strong>of</strong> his Episcopal Functions; for supporting a Missionary or Missionaries,<br />

whose Duty it shall be to attend to and preach in the vacant Churches; and for<br />

such other Purposes, as to the Convention shall appear conducive to the Good <strong>of</strong><br />

the Church, to have promoted.” Bend bracketed some passages <strong>of</strong> the sermon for<br />

omission at subsequent preachings.<br />

Rogers’ funeral is also not in the parish register. Bend originally included the<br />

complete biblical verse, but he later struck out the words, “because the days are<br />
