revised and re-written in the hand <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Sylvester Boarman. This sermon<br />

is based on the “Sermon pur le IV. dimanche de l’Avent. Sur la penitence” by the<br />

French Jesuit Rev. Louis Bourdaloue. Cf., for instance, Bourdaloue’s Sermons ... pour<br />

l’Avent. Paris: Aux depens de Rigaud, 1716, pp. 462-506. Beadnall, a Jesuit, served in<br />

Maryland from 1749 until his death.<br />
