that the total number remained under 300. Only a few of these were children of
German soldiers.
During the war, the Germans also had smaller and larger bases in different harbor
cities on the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia through which there was
significant logistics traffic. The following table contains data on the birth rate for
illegitimate children in these harbor cities, not including Helsinki and the already
analyzed towns of Tornio, Kemi and Oulu.
German transit of Finnish territory began in September 1940, and continued on
briskly to September 1944. The data in the table indicates that the birth rate for
illegitimate children in the coastal cities of the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of
Bothnia did not increase in a really significant manner, although there was clear
growth. Between 1940 and 1942, 1,118 illegitimate children were born in the
aforementioned harbor cities. The corresponding number for 1943-1945 was 1,293,
for an increase of 175 (+15.6%). However, the numbers in these cases remained
quite small.
The city of Helsinki has been left out of the investigation because there were large
numbers of children born there, nor is it really possible to separate out children of
German soldiers in particular from other illegitimate children. The annual numbers
