elonged was authorized to marry them, or they could get married in the magistrate
at Oslo or the equivalent in Germany. The woman in question was required to
move to Germany after the marriage.
The marriage regulations set in February 1941 indicated the necessary documents
for marriage; these regulations were made even more stringent in 1942. According
to these latter requirements, a Norwegian woman marrying a German soldier had to
prove that she
- was racially superior to the average German
- was intellectually on the same level as her husband
- was fluent enough in German to speak with her husband using that
language
- was in good health
- was not of Sami descent
- did not have a reputation for immorality, and was not a prostitute
- was politically reliable
Especially early on in the war, many couples who were dating wanted to get
married, but not many marriages actually took place in Norway. According to the
Norwegian authorities, a little over 200 marriages between Norwegian women and
German soldiers took place during the war. As some of the marriages took place in
Germany, the estimated total number of marriages was 400-500. The most
important reasons for this relatively low number were the difficult terms for getting
a marriage permit, as well as the many steps and red tape one had to navigate to get
one. The couple needed the following documents in order to marry:
- a medical fitness document from a German physician
- genealogical records for both parents and grandparents, in the correct
format
- a certificate concerning political reliability
- a certificate concerning racial status
The woman in question also needed to have photos taken of her from different
angles.
