graph of a cat. The image should not be cluttered with unnecessary words.
The presenter can present a visual image and then once the audience has had
a moment to understand that then the presenter can speak. It is important to
stress that visuals are not there to be read. An oral presentation is not a reading
exercise for the audience, but is rather a moment for the presenter to
communicate a message in the clearest possible way.
Much of what was taught revolved around the key points that Garr Reynolds
sets out in his website.
These are reported here and briefly described.
He gives slide tips:
Keep it simple – the presentation must be easy to understand;
Limit bullet points and text – use pictures when possible as they are much more
effective;
Limit transitions and builds (animation) – there is no need to use fancy slides and
fades in and out;
Use high quality graphics – bad clip art can add to confusion rather than clarity;
Have a visual theme but avoid using PowerPoint templates – he suggests that
people have seen the commercial slide backgrounds so much that they become
bored with them;
Use appropriate charts – but don’t overload them with information, even here
less can be better;
Use color well – don’t allow detail to be lost because it is not clear;
Choose fonts well – he suggests presenters use one style of a sans serif font, but
different versions of the same font family can be used;
Use video or audio
Spend time in the slide – this allows you to get a clear overview of what you are
doing.
Organization and preparation tips
Start with the end in mind – you need to know where you want to go with your
presentation to know how to get there;
Know your audience as well as possible – the same theme of presentation should
be approached differently for different audiences;
Content, content, content – a good presentation must say something;
Keep it simple – this has been discussed above;
