Un modello <strong>di</strong> multilinguismo: Erasmus Mundus<br />

Abstract<br />

Erasmus Mundus is a programme designed with the objective of promoting mobility<br />

and cooperation in higher education. This project enables students, teachers, researchers<br />

and employees in this field to participate in a study period in several foreign<br />

countries. In this way, it is possible for participants to learn and / or improve their<br />

competences in more than one foreign language simultaneously, in a multi-lingual<br />

environment. The Master of Cultural LANDScapes (MACLANDS) is one of numerous<br />

courses existing within the Erasmus Mundus project. Scholarship holders spend 24<br />

months in three <strong>di</strong>fferent universities in Italy, France and Germany, and thus need to<br />

learn French, Italian and German. During the second semester of academic year 2010-<br />

2011, the University of Naples Federico II was, for the third year, host to MACLANDS<br />

participants. The experience of the previous two years has shown that the acquisition<br />

and use of more than one foreign language contemporaneously in a short time may<br />

create problems regar<strong>di</strong>ng attendance at university lessons. As a consequence, the<br />

study of German in Germany, of French in France and Italian in Italy, becomes the<br />

vehicle by means of which students are to understand and, above all, acquire the<br />

subject contents of the Master’s programme. To enable participants to deal with this,<br />

pedagogic activities focus mostly on the skills of listening and speaking following a<br />

communicative, inter-cultural approach. Communication in the classroom is multilingual,<br />

with frequent code switching. Thanks to this richness and <strong>di</strong>versity of languages, a<br />

stimulating atmosphere is created, allowing for sociolinguistic, morpho-syntactic and<br />

lexical comparisons and exchanges, as well as those of a cultural nature and between<br />

course participants and the teacher.<br />
