internationalised task which is lo cated within a content module of an EAP<br />

course inspires students to use <strong>di</strong>fferent skills, techniques and knowledge<br />

bases to activate their thinking and learning.<br />

3.2.5 Task 2: Internationalised Task<br />

A total of 16 students from 6 <strong>di</strong>fferent countries took this finance module: 5<br />

Chinese, 2 Sau<strong>di</strong>s, 3 Japanese, 2 Spanish, 2 Thais and 2 Russians. At 9.00am,<br />

two hours before the beginning of the formal examination, students were<br />

placed in four <strong>di</strong>fferent groups of 4 and set the following task:<br />

You are on the senior management team of a large multinational company<br />

specialising in software development. Your task is t o choose an investment<br />

location to set up a new company in one of the following countries:<br />

China, Japan, Thailand, Russia, Sau<strong>di</strong> Arabia, Japan<br />

In deci<strong>di</strong>ng where to invest you should consider the following:<br />

- Taxation rates<br />

- Skills levels of the workforce<br />

- Currency<br />

- Government regulations<br />

- Salary rates<br />

- Environmental issues<br />

Make a recommendation to the Board of Directors.<br />

3.2.6 Format<br />

Students worked actively in their groups before commencing the examination.<br />

They <strong>di</strong>d not know that this topic would be assigned: the only formal prompt<br />

had occurred in a previous lesson in which students had been asked to give a<br />

short, informal presentation on the economy and stock market of their countries<br />

in small groups.<br />
