dos responsáveis. É perseguido e foge para as montanhas, jurando pegar o segundo. Em uma batalha, ele o encontra e o mata. Era o clímax do filme. 294 As cenas de Pancho quando jovem foram interpretadas por um ator famoso de Hollywood, Raoul Walsh. Aquelas em que Pancho já era adulto foram protagonizadas, acredite se quiser, pelo próprio herói. Ele interpretou a si próprio e seguiu o roteiro adaptado sem reclamações. Pelo contrato assinado com a Mutual Film Company, Pancho ganhou 20% da arrecadação com as bilheterias, dinheiro que o ajudou a comprar armas nos Estados Unidos. 295 Quatro cinegrafistas da empresa o acompanhavam nas aventuras militares pelo México. Por insistência deles, Pancho realizou diversas manobras com seu cavalo antes das batalhas. Para não espantar o público, ainda aceitou trocar o sombreiro flácido por um uniforme militar. Gostou tanto do personagem que adotou a nova vestimenta em definitivo. Aconteceu assim um estranho fenômeno. Pancho Villa se tornou um personagem real baseado em fatos ficcionais. 296 Pancho morreu vítima de uma emboscada em 1923, quando seu carro foi alvejado por 40 tiros. Desde então, sua fama só cresceu, até que se tornou o mexicano mais conhecido nos Estados Unidos. Seu nome está em restaurantes de tacos, nachos e burritos no mundo tudo: em Glasgow, Ottawa, Moscou, Tóquio, Anchorage (Alasca) e Cascavel, no Paraná (com direito a bandinha de mariachis cantando La Bamba). Também ganhou direito a um retrato na Galeria dos Patriotas Latino-Americanos na Casa Rosada, a sede do poder executivo na Argentina (está no mesmo salão com imagens de Simón Bolívar, Salvador Allende, Perón e Che Guevara). Leis promulgadas por Díaz em 1893 e 1894 expropriaram 50 milhões de hectares e deixaram milhares de pessoas repentinamente sem ter com o que viver. A demanda por redistribuição de terras, portanto, era legítima . 297 O fôlego dessa adoração prolongada se deve a duas crenças principais. A primeira é a ideia de que Pancho era um antiamericano. Em 1916 ele comandou um ataque com quatro centenas de homens armados à cidade fronteiriça de Columbus, nos Estados Unidos. Morreram dez americanos – a maioria civis – e mais de cem “villistas”, como eram chamados seus seguidores. “Os salteadores [de Pancho Villa] produziram um caudilho em potencial e uma lenda – a do único líder mexicano que tentou invadir a terra dos gringos neste século 20”, escreveu Hobsbawm ainda no século passado. 298 A segunda crença é a de que ele foi o Robin Hood latino-americano: roubava dos ricos para dar aos pobres. Criou escolas, cuidou dos órfãos, confiscou latifúndios e defendeu a reforma agrária. As duas crenças, porém, são dois mitos. Pancho amava os Estados Unidos. Queria que um de seus filhos estudasse lá. 299 Se é verdade que profetizou a reforma agrária, ele a adiou o quanto pôde. Depois, esqueceu completamente o assunto e viveu seus últimos anos como um latifundiário conservador. Por fim, atacava os ricos tanto quanto os pobres.
