PUNISHMENT AND DISCIPLINARY REGIME IN SLOVENIAN GENERAL
UPPER-SECONDARY SCHOOLS (GYMNASIUM) IN THE NEO-ABSOLUTISM

Summary:
The diploma thesis treats the theme of discipline and punishment of students in
general upper-secondary schools – gymnasiums – on Slovenian territory in the era
of neo-absolutism. We present a historical overview of the period and review
gymnasium schooling in the time before the March Revolution in 1848 and after it,
in the neo-absolutism period. We also speak about the relationship between
church and state which significantly affected the education in that period. We
present in detail gymnasium disciplinary legislation and regulations and we analyze
the school journals from the disciplinary point of view. With the analysis of the
memories of well-known Slovenians such Janez Trdina, Josip Vošnjak, Pavel
Turner and with the case study of the Classical gymnasium Maribor we analyze the
concrete state of the theme. The case study showed when and which punishment
were given to the students with which reasons and also the differences between
them. We proved how the given punishments were connected with the existent
disciplinary regulations and evaluated the disciplinary and punishment regime at
Classical gymnasium Maribor.
