Un fleuve humain
Un fleuve humain (Ein menschlicher Fluss) – den Titel seines Films
borgte sich Sylvain L’Espérance vom großen Dokumentarfilmer
Johan van der Keuken, der nach einem Aufenthalt am Niger den
Fluss und seine Anwohner so treffend bezeichnete. »Ich wollte die
unglaubliche Vielfalt menschlicher Tätigkeiten zeigen, die sich
hier im Nigerdelta finden. Ich begegnete Männern und Frauen, die
Tag für Tag dieses Gebiet durchqueren und prägen; einige Nomaden,
andere sesshaft: Fischer, Handwerker, Händler, Hirten und
Kapitäne.« Menschen verschiedenster Kulturen leben in Mali
friedvoll zusammen. Bozo-Fischer, Fulani-Hirten und Songhai-Bauern
– sie alle teilen sich das Land des Binnendeltas in Mali.
Un fleuve humain beschreibt die Jahrhunderte alte Symbiose zwischen
den Anwohnern und den Zyklen des Niger, die jetzt zu Ende
geht. Langsam aber stetig sinkt der Wasserstand, die Netze bleiben
leer, das Weideland verdorrt, die Wüste ist auf dem Vormarsch.
»Es gibt ein Afrika jenseits von Armut und Bürgerkrieg. Wer es
kennt, weiß, dass ein friedliches Miteinander möglich ist.« Sylvain

In Mali, the inland delta of the Niger river is made up of a labyrinth
of streams, lakes, islands, and many different ethnicities. Un
fleuve humain opens with the calm majesty of the river, with the
plains and the sky lost in the mists on the horizon.
We see the river through the eyes of those whose lives depend on
it- the dugout builder who explains how his boats must be in harmony
with the river and the boat skipper who shows how to read
the currents and movements under the surface. The fish seller
worries about the disappearance of the rushes, and with them the
sheltering fish. The shepherd relates how all the big predators
have gone as the cattle suffer from lack of water. They each have
their perception of the river: its beauty, its power to nourish, its
depth and breadth. The river is a living thing, slowly dying before
our eyes. This documentary has a sculptural beauty – the portrait
of Niger and its people is crafted with such care that the filmmaker
seems to disappear, the extraordinary images taking on a life of
their own.
Regie SYLVAIN L’ESPÉRANCE, geb. 1961 in Montreal. Studium der
bildenden Künste an der Universität von Québec. Anschließend
Filmstudium an der Concordia Universität. Sein Film Les printemps
incertains, (1992) beschreibt den Niedergang eines Arbeiterviertels
in Montreal. Später dreht er vorwiegend in Afrika. Er ist Mitgründer
der Les films du tricyle Filmproduktion.
