Uncovering Michael Moore
Dichtung und Wahrheit. Michael Moore ist ein berühmter Mann,
und spätestens seit seinem Oscar-Auftritt eine Ikone der amerikanischen
Linken. Ihm am Zeug zu flicken verbietet sich, sofern man
nicht zur Bush-Fraktion gehört. Debbie Melnyk und Rick Caine aus
Kanada begleiten Michael Moores Promotion Tour beim Start von
»Fahrenheit 911« und seine »Slacker Uprising Tour« zu den Wahlen
2004 – und wundern sich zusehends über Moores Methoden, die
denen seiner rechten Gegner in nichts nachstehen. Noam
Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Albert Maysles, oder Errol Morris zeigen
sich nicht weniger perplex und »St. Michael« lässt das kanadische
Filmteam von seinen Bodyguards genauso unfreundlich an die frische
Luft befördern, wie es ihm einst selbst widerfahren ist.
The aim of Manufacturing Dissent is to go behind the hype. It follows
Michael Moore on tour promoting Farenheit 9/11, starting out
as a balanced exploration of the filmmaker and political activist.
After the filmmakers fail to secure an interview with Moore, they
meet critics, former colleagues and long-time observers and
Moore’s credibility as a journalist and filmmaker is brought into
question. Canadian filmmakers Melnyk and Caine present an evenhanded
but painfully honest portrait, whilst exploring the politically-charged
climate in the U.S. that has allowed Moore to rise
from filmmaker to icon of the political left. This film is not an attack
by right-leaning polemicists, but a study by two self-described
“progressive liberals”.
The film subtly and carefully discloses the facts and presents the
interviewees’ points of view with accuracy and integrity, convictions
that many viewers, in turn, feel are lacking from the activist’s
own work. It gradually highlights a reluctantly-developed disillusionment
with Moore, but manages to do so without sensationalising
its findings.
Regie RICK CAINE arbeitet seit vielen Jahren als Journalist, Produzent
und Regisseur in den USA, Kanada und England; u.a. für
Documentary Channel, Canal D und BBC. DEBBIE MELNYK arbeitete
mehrere Jahre als TV-Produzentin in England und Deutschland,
u. a. für NBC, CBC und Reuters. Danach Film-Studium an der
New York University und Tätigkeit als Regisseurin und Produzentin
in Los Angeles. Caine und Melnyk leben in Toronto, Kanada.
