Ethics and Quality – Commodity Science
The overwhelming concern with everyday's material problems of existence limits our involvement into
spiritual aspects and qualities of life. Among the different systems of ethics the one, which does not rely on
religions and ideologies is promoted as independent ethics. According to T. Kotarbinski, founder of
„Praxeology”, such ethics should be understood as the theory of managing the spiritual life of human beings,
which is based on valuations of our activities by our own conscience. This implies inadequacy caused by
adopted standards and the mental qualities of humans acting in different professions and cultures. From the
point of view of quality-commodity science one of the most important fields of practical applications for
standards of ethics is food production and trade. There are attempts to define the requirements, which have to
be fulfilled by the organizations and institutions willing to propose standards in professional ethics. Following
these indications sets of standards and codes of ethics have been proposed like the one consisting of 10
principles for food production, processing and trade promoted in Poland. It is believed, that implementation of
standards of ethics in practice will lead to fulfilling the requirements of quality-commodity science and finally
eliminate the necessity of the warning: „Caveat emptor” formulated already in the Roman Empire.

Wie viel Moral verträgt ein Kaufmann?
Unter einem „Kaufmann“ verstehe ich hier – gemäß dem Handelsrecht definiert – jeden, der ein
Handelsgewerbe selbständig betreibt. Die Frage, wie viel Moral (Ethik) ein Kaufmann verträgt, reflektiert das
tiefer liegende und allgemeine Problem: die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen moralischer Handlungen im Rahmen
von Unternehmen. Anders gesagt: Müssen zwischen allgemein mehr oder weniger akzeptierten moralischen
Regeln und Normen und der Logik ökonomischer Konkurrenz notwendigerweise Widersprüche bestehen?
Oder, noch provokanter gefragt: Erfordert geschäftlicher Erfolg unmoralisches Handeln?
Man kann sich in der Tat oft nicht des Eindrucks erwehren, dass die freie Marktwirtschaft zur moralischen
Korruption des einzelnen führt. Dies bleibt hier genauer zu untersuchen. Analysiert werden auch andere
moralische/ethische Aspekte kaufmännischer Aktivitäten, die auf den Führungsebenen von Unternehmen
relevant sind. Beispielsweise distributive Gerechtigkeit, Arbeit, Entfremdung, CSR (Corporate Social
Responsibility).
Moralisches/unmoralisches Handeln in Unternehmen hängt, wie es scheint, ganz entscheidend von den
jeweiligen Rahmenbedingungen ab, die einerseits von den Unternehmen selbst, andererseits von äußeren
Faktoren (Gesetzen, Arbeitsmarktsituation usw.) definiert werden.
