Rhetoric.<br />

Course i is fundamental. Thorough instruction is given in the<br />

structure of the sentence and the paragraph ; the general principles<br />

of diction are also taught and illustrated. Course 2 is a training in<br />

daily<br />

observation and reflection and in rapid practical writing.<br />

Courses ib, 4, 5, and 8 are literary in substance, but are shaped<br />

with a view to the acquisition of a more finished prose style.<br />

Courses 3 and are 9 designed for persons intending to become high<br />

school teachers or desirous of studying literary expression more<br />

systematically.<br />

Course 6 is designed for persons intending to study law, history,<br />

political science, philosophy, and other subjects a involving knowledge<br />

of augmentative methods.<br />

Course 7 is designed to supplement Courses 3, 4, and 8.<br />

1. The technique of narrative, descriptive, and expository<br />

writing. A three-hour course, open to all students in Arts and in<br />

the regular course in Agriculture. One lecture weekly and two exer<br />

cises in paragraphing, essay-draughting,<br />

and the interpretation of<br />

illustrative texts, in connection with Hart's Handbook of English<br />

2. English Composition. Counts as three hours. Open to stu<br />

dents who have had Course 1 .<br />

Each member of the class will write<br />

week every a fixed number of papers of prescribed length upon sub<br />

jects chosen by<br />

himself. Consultation hours for the discussion and<br />

criticism of papers. One lecture weekly : either, W., 11, White 2,<br />

2a. English Composition. Counts as two hours. For regular<br />

students in the College of Agriculture who have had Course 1. Stu<br />

dents who expect to take this course should consult Assistant<br />

Professor PrESCOTT.<br />

3. Literary Forms. Open to all members in the course in Arts.<br />
