mittee, he is then put under the supervision of the special committee<br />

conducting the work which he desires to pursue. This special com<br />

mittee is made up of the professors in charge of the work in the ma<br />

jor and minor subjects. It has been decided by the Faculty that in<br />

structors are not eligible for membership on the special committees<br />

nor on the committees conducting examinations. The chairman of<br />

the special committee, after consultation with the other members of<br />

the committee, is assumed to represent their views of action, and to<br />

be the regular channel of communication between candidates and the<br />

general committee ; conveying or indorsing, for instance, petitions<br />

from candidates, and forwarding recommendations for changes in the<br />

announcements of major and minor subjects, or additions suggested to<br />

the of membership the special committee itself, either for the guidance<br />

of the work of candidates or to complete the number of examiners.<br />

The function of the general committee is to decide matters of prece<br />

dent or procedure or policy, securing Faculty action where necessary,<br />

and to be the channel of communication between the special commit<br />

tees and the <strong>University</strong> Faculty.<br />

Advanced Degrees.<br />

Courses of graduate study leading to advanced degrees are provided<br />

in the following departments : Semitic Languages, Classical Archae<br />

ology and History of Art, Comparative Philology, Greek, Latin, Ger<br />

manic Languages, Romance Languages, English Literature and En<br />

glish Philology, Philosophy, History and Political Science, Mathemat<br />

ics and Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Arboriculture,<br />

Entomology and General Invertebrate Zoology, Physiology and Verte<br />

brate Zoology and Neurology, Anatomical Methods and Human Anat<br />

omy, Microscopy and Histology and Embryology, Geology and Pa<br />

leontology and Mineralogy, Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary<br />

Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering, including Bridge, Railroad,<br />

Sanitary, Hydraulic, and Geodetic Engineering, and in Mechanical<br />

Engineering, including Electrical, Steam, and Marine Engineering,<br />

Naval Architecture, and Railway Machinery.<br />

Candidates for advanced degrees must present themselves for exami<br />

nation in one major and two minor subjects (except for the Master's<br />

degree, for which one major and one minor are required), which must<br />

have been determined upon, with the approval of a committee of the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Faculty, as early as October 15<br />

of the year in which the<br />

degree is expected to be given, if it be the Master's degree, or of the<br />

year preceding that in which the degree is expected to befgiven, if it<br />

be the Doctor's degree.
