III. As Special Students.<br />

Persons of the requisite age may be admitted as special stu<br />

dents, without examination, provided they give evidence of ability<br />

to do special work creditably in the <strong>University</strong>, are recommended to<br />

the Faculty concerned by the professor in charge of the department<br />

of study in which they desire to take a large part of their work, and<br />

have not already been admitted to the <strong>University</strong>, nor, having applied<br />

for admission, been rejected. By Faculty action, the recommendation<br />

of a special student is to be referred to a committee for provisional<br />

acceptance before final ratification by the Faculty<br />

concerned. Such<br />

students may graduate in any of the courses, on condition of passing<br />

all the required examinations, including those for admission. Stu<br />

dents are not permitted to make up deficiences in entrance subjects by<br />

attending university instruction in those subjects, but are required to<br />

take the necessary instruction outside of the <strong>University</strong>. Special stu<br />

dents are subject to the same regulations in regard to examinations<br />

and number of hours as students in the general course.<br />

Special students in the Academic Department are admitted at the<br />

age of twenty-three years.<br />

Special students in the College of Law are admitted at the age of<br />

twenty years.<br />

Special students in the College of Agriculture are admitted at the<br />

age of eighteen years.<br />

For admission as special students in Forestry see under College of<br />

Forestry.<br />

Special students in the College of Architecture and Sibley College<br />

are admitted at the age of twenty-one years.<br />

The College of Civil Engineering admits as special students at the<br />

age of twenty-one only graduates of other institutions pursuing ad<br />

vanced work, when the applicants are not candidates for a degree.<br />

Special students in Sibley College will be expected to work with<br />

regular classes wherever practicable, and to pursue a regular mechanic<br />

arts course, such as is considered by the Director to be suitable for<br />

artisans and other optional students, not candidates for a degree.<br />

Candidates for admission as special students should correspond di<br />

rectly with the professor in whose department they expect to take<br />

work, in order to secure a recommendation.<br />

ADMISSION TO ADVANCED STANDING.<br />

i. On Examination. On presenting evidence of good character,<br />

or, in case he comes from another college or university, a letter of<br />

honorable dismissal, a candidate may be admitted to any class at the
