or a certificate of graduation from an approved school (page 51) ;<br />

or, in addition to the requirements mentioned above in 1 and 2,<br />

he must pass examinations or present acceptable certificates show<br />

ing<br />

that he has done an amount of work equivalent to a course of<br />

years'<br />

three duration in a single subject in preparatory schools of ap<br />

proved standing.* For the above amount of equivalent work, a free<br />

choice among the various subjects taught in the preparatory schools<br />

of approved standing, and not otherwise counted, will usually be ac<br />

cepted ; but combinations of the following subjects, equivalent to<br />

three<br />

years'<br />

time under instruction, are recommended as most suitable<br />

for entrance to the courses in the College of Civil Engineering :<br />

(a) History, or additional English language and literature,<br />

(b)<br />

(c)<br />

Additional modern languages or literature.<br />

Freehand or linear drawing.<br />

(d) Physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, geology, descriptive<br />

astronomy, or additional physiology.<br />

(e)<br />

Latin or Greek.<br />

This college admits as Special Students only graduates of other in<br />

stitutions pursuing advanced work, when the applicants are not can<br />

didates for a degree. See page 52.<br />
