and Greek, Archaeology and Comparative Philology, Neurology and<br />

Physiology and Vertebrate Zoology (including Anatomical Methods<br />

and Human Anatomy and Microscopy, Histology, and Embryology),<br />

with Invertebrate Zoology and Entomology, Botany and Geology,<br />

English, American History, one each.<br />

(j). The Oliver Graduate Scholarship in Mathematics, founded<br />

November, 1896, in memory of Professor James Edward Oliver, has<br />

an annual value of $300 and is awarded under the same conditions as<br />

other graduate scholarships.<br />

2. All candidates for Fellowships and Graduate Scholarships must<br />

be graduates of this <strong>University</strong>, or of some other institution having<br />

equivalent courses of instruction, and must be of high character and<br />

marked ability in some important department of study.<br />

3. Fellows and Graduate Scholars will be selected by the <strong>University</strong><br />

on the recommendation of the department in which the<br />

applicants desire to carry on the principal part of their work.<br />

4. All applications and testimonials must be filed with the Registrar<br />

on or before the 15th of April of the collegiate year preceding the one<br />

for which the application is made. Blank forms for application may<br />

be obtained from the Registrar.<br />

5. The term of each Fellowship and Graduate Scholarship is one<br />

year ; but the term may be extended to two years, providing the ex<br />

tension does not increase the number of Fellows and Graduate Scholars<br />

beyond that named in paragraph 1 of this act.<br />

6. The moneys due on Fellowships and Graduate Scholarships are<br />

paid at the office of the Treasurer of the <strong>University</strong> in three equal<br />

payments, on the 15th of December, the 15th of March, and the 15th<br />

of June.<br />

7. In view of the fact that practical <strong>University</strong> instruction will be<br />

of use in training said Fellows and Scholars for future usefulness, each<br />

holder of a Fellowship or Graduate Scholarship shall be liable to ren<br />

der service to the <strong>University</strong> in the work of instruction or examination<br />

to the extent of four hours per week through the collegiate year.<br />

The distribution and assignment of this service shall be determined<br />

by the head of the department in which the Fellow or Scholar is doing<br />

the principal work. It is expected that the President White Fellows<br />

in History and Political Science will do a large part of their study in<br />

the President White Library, and to this end, it is required that, except<br />

when, with the consent of the Librarian of the <strong>University</strong>, they are<br />

excused or assigned to other duties by the Professors of History and<br />

Political Science, said Fellows shall be in attendance in the Library<br />

not less than four hours each per day.
