A study of the course of ethical reflection, with special reference to<br />

the development of the several theories in their relations to one<br />

another and to the general influences of their time. This class will<br />

use Sidgwick's History of Ethics as a general text book.<br />

22. German Pessimism, with special reference to Schopen<br />

hauer and E. von Hartmann. Lectures and discussions. Winter<br />

In this course attention will be directed, not only to the ethical and<br />

social import of the outburst of Pessimism in this century, but also<br />

to the significance. of the metaphysical systems of Schopenhauer and<br />

von Hartmann in the of history philosophy. Special attention will<br />

be devoted to the system of Schopenhauer. In connection with this<br />

course students will be expected to read Scophenhauer's World as<br />

Will and Idea, and von Hartmann's Philosophy of the Unconscious.<br />
