SUMMER SESSION. 337<br />

A course is offered in Nature-study in three departments : ( i )<br />

Nature-study in insect-life, (2) Nature-study in plant-life, (3) Nature-<br />

on study the farm.<br />

This course in Nature-Study is a one-session course. Its purpose is<br />

to awaken interest in Nature-Study,<br />

and to present the means and<br />

materials to be employed in the teaching of nature subjects. Persons<br />

who desire advanced instruction will register in the other courses of<br />

the summer session, or in other courses in Agriculture in the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

The course is open to teachers in New York Slate free of tuition,<br />

since the work is supported by a state fund for the extension of agri<br />

cultural knowledge. The three subjects comprise a full course, and<br />

persons who registerfor the course are required to devote their whole<br />

time to it. The instruction will consist of lectures, laboratory work,<br />

and field excursions. It is the purpose of the course to teach both the<br />

facts and the methods of serious Nature-study, with particular refer<br />

ence to fitting teachers to take up the work in their own schools. The<br />

vicinity of Ithaca is rich in animal and plant life and in entertaining<br />

scenery.<br />

The different subdivisions of the course in Nature-study cannot be<br />

taken separately, but the entire course must be taken.<br />

A. On the Farm. Two lectures per week, laboratory work and<br />

excursions. A study of the Effect of Tillage on Plants and of Food<br />

on the Growth of Animals : The Composition and Texture of Soils :<br />

The Natural Features of Beauty in Rural Life. M. , 9-5,<br />

B. Insect Life. Lectures and field work on the habits of insects.<br />

Two lectures and one excursion each week. In charge of Professor<br />

Comstock.<br />

BB. Insect Life. Laboratory work in the methods of nature-study,<br />

available for secondary schools. Two days each week excepting time<br />

occupied by course B. W., F., 9-5, White Hall. Assistant Professor<br />

C. Plant Life. Lectures, laboratory work, and excursions, with<br />

special attention to the kinds, habits and characteristics of plants as<br />

they grow in the fields. T., Th., 9-5, Morrill Hall. In charge of<br />
