lation of Greek to Latin and to English. The Greek elements in<br />

(2) The Attic dialect in its official use at Athens. and Study inter<br />

pretation of inscriptions from squeezes, lantern views and photo<br />

B. Teachers' Course in Homer. The work of the course will<br />

center in the Iliad and will consist of three parts<br />

(a) The reading and interpretation of selected portions of the Iliad.<br />

(b) The study of the language of the poem and its relations to the<br />

Attic dialect ; the epic hexameter, its origin and development ; the<br />

principles of interpretation ; some features of life in the Homeric<br />

period"<br />

; the value of archseology for the understanding of the poem;<br />

aims and methods in translating.<br />

(c) Discussions on the teaching of Homer ; the end to be kept in<br />

view ; practical difficulties in the work. The most valuable books<br />
