dents in the College of Law are exempt from this requirement, but<br />

may take any of the courses enumerated below.<br />

Students who drill are required to provide themselves with the Uni<br />

versity uniform, unless excused on account of inability to procure it,<br />

and are they held accountable for loss or injury to the arms and other<br />

public property issued to them.<br />

Any member of the <strong>Cornell</strong> <strong>University</strong> corps who has satisfactorily<br />

performed all the duties required for the first year, and who is qualified<br />

therefor, may be selected for the place of a commissioned officer, if<br />

needed. For the performance of his duties as a commissioned officer<br />

in the junior or senior year, he is entitled, if duly registered therefor,<br />

to credit of three recitation hours a week for the fall and spring<br />

terms, and, at graduation, he may receive a certificate of military pro<br />

ficiency with his diploma, provided he has also completed the course<br />

in science military prescribed for the winter term of the senior year.<br />

Upon the graduation of each class, the names of such students as<br />

have shown special aptitude for military service will be reported to the<br />

Adjutant General of the Army and to the Adjutant General of the<br />

State of New York, and the names of the three most distinguished<br />

students in military science and tactics will be inserted in the Official<br />

Army Register,<br />

The following courses are offered in 1899-1900:<br />

Military Drill is required of all male Freshmen and Sophomores<br />

except aliens, laboring students, special students and those physically<br />

unfitted therefor. A student deficient in a term of Military Drill is<br />

not permitted to substitute anything else for that work, or to be ex<br />

cused from any subsequent term until the deficiency is removed. In<br />

the cases of students not taking Drill and Gymnasium,<br />

an equivalent<br />

1. Infantry Drill. School of the soldier. School of the company.<br />

School of the battalion and ceremonies. Fall and spring terms. M.,<br />

2. Artillery Drill for Selected Detatchments. School of the<br />

Battery, dismounted. Sabre exercise. Fall and spring terms. M.,<br />

W., F., 4:45.<br />

3. Military Signaling combined with the Bicycle,<br />

detachments. Fall and spring terms. M., W., F., 4:45.<br />

for selected<br />

Students in course 2 and are selected 3 by the Commandant from<br />

those reasonably proficient in course 1.<br />

4. and Musketry Target Practice. Theoretical instruction.<br />

Position and aiming drills. Winter term, M., W., 12. Armory.
