GRADUATE DEPARTMENT.<br />

The final examinations for these degrees may be both oral and<br />

written, and in the non-technical courses are to be in charge of a com<br />

mittee of not less than three members, except for the Master's degree,<br />

where two members may suffice. These examinations occur in the<br />

second week before Commencement, except in the case of candidates<br />

who take their examination in a year subsequent to that in which the<br />

required amount of resident study was completed. In case of neces<br />

sity, the examination may be held during the week next preceding<br />

that now fixed for holding them.<br />

In the final examination for advanced degrees, the examination of<br />

the thesis shall regularly precede the further examination of the can<br />

didate. In the case of students who take the examination in the year<br />

subsequent to that in which the required amount of study has been<br />

completed, the special committee is authorized to arrange such exam<br />

inations at any time during the <strong>University</strong> year ; provided that two<br />

weeks'<br />

notice shall be given to the chairman of the general committee.<br />

The special requirements for these degrees are as follows :<br />

The Master's Degree.<br />

Hereafter, in place of the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Phil<br />

osophy, Master of Letters, and Master of Science, the one degree of<br />

Master of Arts is to be conferred.<br />

The degree of Master of Science in Architecture is to be conferred<br />

as heretofore on those who have taken the corresponding baccalau<br />

reate degree here, or at some other college or university where the<br />

requirements for the said baccalaureate degree are equal to those of<br />

this <strong>University</strong>, in case the candidate has spent at least one year at the<br />

<strong>University</strong>, pursuing an accepted course of study, upon presenting a<br />

satisfactory thesis and passing the required special final examinations<br />

as above.<br />

The degree of Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Mechanical<br />

Engineering, or Master of Science in Agriculture is conferred, after<br />

at least one year of resident study, on candidates who have received<br />

the corresponding first degree, upon presenting a satisfactory thesis<br />

and passing the required special final examination as above. In<br />

special cases graduates of this <strong>University</strong>, on the recommendation of<br />

the special committee that would have charge of their work, may, by<br />

vote of the <strong>University</strong> Faculty in each case, become candidates for the<br />

degree of M.C.E., M.M.E., and M.S. in Agr.,<br />

Candidates for degrees in absentia are to appear in person at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> to be examined, and to receive the diploma at Commence<br />

ment.
