Montanine type
The mass spectral fragmentation patterns observed for alkaloids containing the
5,11-methanomorphanthridine nucleus is very depending of the substituents at
C-2 and C-3, the nature as well as their particular configuration have a very significant
effect. Thus, all the compounds which possess a methoxyl group give rise to
an M-31 ion.
The configuration of the C-2 substituent has a considerable effect on the extent
to which the retro Diels-Alder fragmentation ion is observed (Figure 6.17). There
