Accumulation of alkaloids in tissue
The alkaloid content in tissues at the end of the experiment was higher than that
of the culture medium, haemanthamine and galanthamine being the major alkaloids
(Figure 7.10). The control explants (grown without paclobutrazol) accumulated
the highest concentration of alkaloids.
Total production of alkaloids during the experiment
The final alkaloid content (alkaloids accumulated in tissue and those released to
the liquid medium) at the end of the experiment, after a two-month period, is
shown in Table 7.4. The control explants were the most productive, showing a
good appearance with narrow leaves and well developed roots.
Shoot-clumps
In this experiment, some necrosis and vitrification problems appeared from the
fourth sample onwards in all the explants treated with paclobutrazol. These problems
were less notable in the control shoot-clumps and those treated with the lowest
