literature distribution are not much encouraged. Social mission was a neglected<br />

area, but today Pentecostals have begun to involve <strong>the</strong>mselves more vigorously in<br />

<strong>the</strong> social development <strong>of</strong> society.<br />

3.5. Pentecostals and Non-Pentecostals in Rajasthan<br />

There has been a progressive improvement in <strong>the</strong> relationship between<br />

Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals in Rajasthan. Although <strong>the</strong> relationship was not<br />

encouraging in <strong>the</strong> beginning, gradually <strong>the</strong>y have developed a friendly and<br />

healthy relationship, and have begun to mutually respect and accept one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

3.5.1. Pentecostal and Non-Pentecostal Divide<br />

Pentecostalism as a product <strong>of</strong> local revivals among <strong>the</strong> existing Christian<br />

community did not mean that Pentecostals received <strong>the</strong> same degree <strong>of</strong> welcome<br />

throughout its history. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, initially <strong>the</strong>y were not considered a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian community, as in many o<strong>the</strong>r parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> globe and faced opposition<br />

and intolerance from o<strong>the</strong>r forms <strong>of</strong> Christianity. Several stories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mocking,<br />

humiliation, rejection and even physical assault <strong>the</strong>y faced from <strong>the</strong>ir non-<br />

Pentecostal counterparts were narrated by Pentecostals during <strong>the</strong> field work.<br />

There is a dual aspect to <strong>the</strong> opposition faced by Pentecostals. The first is <strong>the</strong><br />

rejection faced by local Christians who had received supernatural <strong>spirit</strong>ual<br />

experiences. They were mocked and mistreated by <strong>the</strong>ir church leadership and<br />

fellow Christians. For example, as seen earlier, during <strong>the</strong> revival in Banaswara,<br />
