tongues. However, he retained <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> tongues as <strong>the</strong> definite sign <strong>of</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit baptism.<br />

Among all <strong>the</strong> Indian revivals, this is <strong>the</strong> only revival that is directly connected to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Azusa Street revival, and it was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latest <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> revivals discussed<br />

above. However, <strong>the</strong> most significant fact is that Calcutta Revival, initiated by <strong>the</strong><br />

Garrs, was primarily a revival among foreign missionaries, and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />

participants in <strong>the</strong> revival was comparatively small, and had little impact on <strong>the</strong><br />

Indians, unlike most o<strong>the</strong>r revivals.<br />

2.3.4. Indian Pentecostalism and Western Pentecostal<br />

Missionaries<br />

As discussed above, indigenous revivals with Pentecostal experiences took place<br />

in various parts <strong>of</strong> India even before <strong>the</strong> western missionaries came to India with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pentecostal message. This does not mean that North American Pentecostal<br />

missionaries played no part in <strong>the</strong> making <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian Pentecostal Movement.<br />

However, as A.C. George comments, <strong>the</strong> Azusa Street missionaries ‘became<br />

instrumental in sparking <strong>the</strong> Pentecostal flame’ in certain parts <strong>of</strong> India, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

played a particularly significant role in <strong>the</strong> growth and development <strong>of</strong> Pentecostal<br />

churches in south India. 169 On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, western missionaries could not have<br />

achieved much without <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> local Pentecostal workers. Both in <strong>the</strong><br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn and nor<strong>the</strong>rn parts <strong>of</strong> India, at least in <strong>the</strong> initial period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mission,<br />
