preservation. This aspect besides demonstrated that crinoids behave not as simple<br />

support for feeding or mimetic refuge, but as a basibiont wherein facultative or more<br />

specialized symbiotic worms develops their own biological cycle.<br />

Conclusions – This is the first record of the association between Antedon mediterranea<br />

and Subadyte pellucida regarding to Italian seas. Moreover, this note aims to<br />

emphasize the presence of a reproductive couple of the polynoid S. pellucida on the<br />

same A. mediterranea host. The possible external brooding of (fertilized) eggs may<br />

constitute an adaptation for a more specialized ectosymbiotic life habit.<br />
