does occur. Figure 5.6 shows observed locations of tornadoes with respect to
the orientation of l<strong>and</strong>falling storms. Occasionally, l<strong>and</strong>falling storms produce
tornado swarms, such as the tornadoes that were observed to be associated
with the l<strong>and</strong>fall of Hurricane Beulah (1969) on the Texas coast, as illustrated
in Figure 5.7. <strong>Hurricanes</strong> Carla (1961) <strong>and</strong> Celia (1970), in contrast, produced
no observed tornadoes.
5.2.6 Inl<strong>and</strong> impacts
Inl<strong>and</strong>, away from the coast, the largest threat to life <strong>and</strong> property occurs as a
result of flash flooding <strong>and</strong> large-scale riverine flooding from excessive rainfall.
