72 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

member fa<strong>the</strong>r's pick<strong>in</strong>g me up <strong>and</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g me over <strong>the</strong> road<br />

when <strong>the</strong> stiff yellow clay had made mortar <strong>of</strong> what <strong>in</strong> summer<br />

was a good smooth road.<br />

We children used to love to watch <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r comb<br />

her hair; it was so long <strong>and</strong> beautifully white, as she sat <strong>in</strong> her<br />

chair it would almost reach <strong>the</strong> floor. I can yet see its silver<br />

sheen as she drew <strong>the</strong> coarse comb through those long, sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

str<strong>and</strong>s; next she would make a f<strong>in</strong>e coil, do<strong>in</strong>g it up <strong>and</strong> stick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a heavy back comb <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> roll, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n it was "d<strong>one</strong> up"<br />

but not f<strong>in</strong>ished. A headb<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> black silk ribbon was bound<br />

about that f<strong>in</strong>e, white forehead, <strong>and</strong> over all a white lace net<br />

cap with a frill pleated very full. All married women <strong>in</strong> early<br />

times wore caps, no matter how young was <strong>the</strong> matron; this<br />

was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>signia <strong>of</strong> her wedded estate, <strong>and</strong> we younger people<br />

thought <strong>the</strong>m all "old married folks" who must wear dark<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s — white was forbidden to wives who would follow<br />

"good form."<br />

I recall that <strong>one</strong> day Bro<strong>the</strong>r WilHam <strong>and</strong> I spent a forenoon<br />

with gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r. We <strong>of</strong>ten went <strong>the</strong>re to look at <strong>the</strong><br />

pictures <strong>in</strong> her old Bible. On this particular morn<strong>in</strong>g she<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested us by tell<strong>in</strong>g fortunes with bread <strong>and</strong> cake <strong>and</strong> a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> charcoal. She placed <strong>in</strong> a saucer <strong>the</strong>se three th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n set <strong>the</strong> dish on <strong>the</strong> old Bible. In her h<strong>and</strong> was a<br />

small ball <strong>of</strong> woolen yarn, which she suspended over <strong>the</strong> center<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saucer, <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong> ball oscillated to <strong>and</strong> fro we would<br />

eagerly await <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> stopp<strong>in</strong>g. Should it cometorest at<strong>the</strong><br />

bit <strong>of</strong> cake, that meant good news from some far-away relative<br />

who at that time happened to be <strong>in</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r's m<strong>in</strong>d; but<br />

sad was it when <strong>the</strong> ball ceased to vibrate at <strong>the</strong> lump <strong>of</strong> char-<br />

coal, for that meant death ! Bread meant someth<strong>in</strong>g fortunate.<br />

I relate this memory <strong>of</strong> my childhood to illustrate that <strong>the</strong><br />

traditions <strong>of</strong> New Engl<strong>and</strong> still existed <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> old days<br />

<strong>of</strong> behef <strong>in</strong> witches had not entirely passed away. Gr<strong>and</strong>-<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r used to tell <strong>of</strong> witches leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir abodes <strong>and</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

away on a broomstick through an open upstairs w<strong>in</strong>dow on<br />

dark nights. They were awesome stories.<br />

I remember well that gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r came over <strong>one</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to talk with mo<strong>the</strong>r on bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>and</strong> I saw that she was cry-
