THE OLD FARM ^^<br />

benas <strong>of</strong> pretty colors. She took her knitt<strong>in</strong>p; witli her to<br />

market <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> odd moments would ply her needles.<br />

In midsummer it was dreadfully hot <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> return<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>the</strong> sun would just p<strong>our</strong> down his rays, but<br />

we girls tried to have everyth<strong>in</strong>g well d<strong>one</strong> before <strong>the</strong>ir homecom<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The boys had milked <strong>the</strong> cows, we had skimmed <strong>the</strong><br />

milk <strong>and</strong> d<strong>one</strong> <strong>the</strong> day's churn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> salted <strong>the</strong> butter <strong>and</strong><br />

put it down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cool, brick-l<strong>in</strong>ed cellar. The "loppered"<br />

milk had been p<strong>our</strong>ed out for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e hogs which fed <strong>and</strong><br />

rooted <strong>and</strong> slept down <strong>in</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orchards. The crocks<br />

were washed <strong>and</strong> placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun to get sweet, <strong>and</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

was all ready when <strong>the</strong> parents came home. We girls would<br />

be look<strong>in</strong>g for some new th<strong>in</strong>gs — a lawn dress, a parasol, new<br />

shoes <strong>and</strong> stock<strong>in</strong>gs, or even a mantilla. 1 here were fresh<br />

supplies for <strong>the</strong> cupboard — tea, sugar, <strong>and</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee; th<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />

be untied <strong>and</strong> placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pantry; <strong>and</strong> what joy it gave us<br />

sisters to look over <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> city <strong>and</strong> put <strong>the</strong>m away.<br />

After a while we could wash <strong>the</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s while mo<strong>the</strong>r was<br />

g<strong>one</strong> to market <strong>and</strong> have <strong>the</strong>m fly<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e or spread<br />

bleach<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> green grass when she returned. How happy<br />

was <strong>the</strong> dear face when <strong>the</strong>y came driv<strong>in</strong>g up to <strong>the</strong> gate.<br />

True, she looked tired <strong>and</strong> her cheeks were <strong>of</strong>ten sunburnt,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>n she was <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> children who loved her <strong>and</strong><br />

were glad to make life's burdens lighter for <strong>the</strong>ir parents. Our<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r were benevolent; <strong>the</strong>ir religion was not <strong>of</strong><br />

word al<strong>one</strong> but <strong>of</strong> deeds <strong>of</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dness to <strong>the</strong> poor <strong>and</strong> unfortu-<br />

nate. "Old Rock," <strong>the</strong> family horse, was slow <strong>and</strong> quiet<br />

quite safe to take <strong>the</strong> little mo<strong>the</strong>r on err<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> love. Three<br />

miles away at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> a long hill <strong>and</strong> over Mill Creek was<br />

<strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Carthage, where fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r were charter<br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Church, <strong>and</strong> where <strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

preached unless some it<strong>in</strong>erant m<strong>in</strong>ister happened to be <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Many poor people who were day laborers <strong>and</strong> had but scanty<br />

fare lived <strong>in</strong> Carthage <strong>in</strong> those days; <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r "thought<br />

upon <strong>the</strong>m," <strong>and</strong> on Saturday afternoons when <strong>the</strong> week's<br />

work was d<strong>one</strong> we would load up <strong>the</strong> express wagon for her to<br />

take to Carthage. Not only did she go to get <strong>the</strong> mail, but<br />

to fulfil her err<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> mercy.
