ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

his new books <strong>and</strong> it required a satchelful for his studies. The<br />

spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school under <strong>the</strong> new pr<strong>of</strong>essor was just what<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe needed to arouse him, <strong>and</strong> he entered with zest<br />

<strong>in</strong>to study.<br />

Both bro<strong>the</strong>rs brought home <strong>the</strong>ir books every night for<br />

study, <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r would help Will by drill<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>in</strong> his Lat<strong>in</strong>,<br />

so that his progress was even more rapid than o<strong>the</strong>rwise. I<br />

wish I could make my gr<strong>and</strong>children <strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>nephews <strong>and</strong><br />

nieces see <strong>our</strong> family group as we were when we ga<strong>the</strong>red about<br />

<strong>the</strong> wide fireplace <strong>in</strong> those long w<strong>in</strong>ter nights. The bright<br />

fire leaped up; <strong>the</strong> light st<strong>and</strong> was brought out, two c<strong>and</strong>les<br />

were lighted, <strong>and</strong> we settled <strong>our</strong>selves for <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g. In <strong>the</strong><br />

midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> group would be <strong>our</strong> beloved parents — fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with his silver hair sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> firelight, <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's ly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

so smoothly <strong>in</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t, dark b<strong>and</strong>s beneath her white lace cap.<br />

How fa<strong>the</strong>r's highly magnify<strong>in</strong>g spectacles sh<strong>one</strong> as he looked<br />

up from an old copy <strong>of</strong> Caesar! Mo<strong>the</strong>r's kerchief was folded<br />

neat <strong>and</strong> white across her breast, <strong>and</strong> that face <strong>of</strong> peace —<br />

for me <strong>the</strong>re has never been ano<strong>the</strong>r like it, so full <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest,<br />

so calm, so gentle! But once s<strong>in</strong>ce have I seen such a pair<br />

<strong>of</strong> brown eyes, both s<strong>of</strong>t <strong>and</strong> bright; <strong>the</strong>y look up at me from<br />

<strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> her great-gr<strong>and</strong>children, my gr<strong>and</strong>child<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ifred.<br />

In <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's h<strong>and</strong>s was usually a garment <strong>in</strong> process <strong>of</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g or a piece <strong>of</strong> mend<strong>in</strong>g. We sisters sat <strong>in</strong> low chairs,<br />

Ida <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> little red chair that had lost its rockers <strong>and</strong> I <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

larger blue chair; she read<strong>in</strong>g her school reader, <strong>and</strong> I struggl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with my knitt<strong>in</strong>g. Ah, how quiet is <strong>the</strong> little sister, but how<br />

quick to hear a mispronunciation from <strong>the</strong> boys! Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

heard a mistake, however, she would but quietly smile. Joe<br />

would be study<strong>in</strong>g geography, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>our</strong> dear mo<strong>the</strong>r he<br />

looked for help, for geography was her specialty; Will would<br />

be read<strong>in</strong>g Caesar <strong>in</strong> monot<strong>one</strong>. Oh, <strong>the</strong> happy even<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong><br />

childhood, pass<strong>in</strong>g swiftly <strong>and</strong> long s<strong>in</strong>ce g<strong>one</strong>!<br />

Sometimes <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>and</strong>lelight fa<strong>the</strong>r would stop to<br />

recite a poem. One I hear over <strong>the</strong> lapse <strong>of</strong> <strong>years</strong>, with a<br />

beat like an ocean throb, it is Derzhav<strong>in</strong>'s "Ode to <strong>the</strong> Deity."<br />

For <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> days that will never return, may I lead
