I70 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

ner's garden! Sadly did I recall <strong>the</strong> vision <strong>of</strong> lovel<strong>in</strong>ess which<br />

commercial greed had literally wiped from <strong>the</strong> earth. Where<br />

were <strong>the</strong> <strong>hundred</strong>s <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art which Mr. HoiFner had,<br />

through a long life <strong>of</strong> extensive travel, ga<strong>the</strong>red from <strong>the</strong> f<strong>our</strong><br />

corners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.?<br />

The garden, as I remember, occupied a prom<strong>in</strong>ent place <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> suburbs <strong>of</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati, on a rise <strong>of</strong> ground slop<strong>in</strong>g both<br />

north <strong>and</strong> south, <strong>and</strong> where <strong>the</strong>re was a perennial spr<strong>in</strong>g which<br />

sent forth Hmpid waters carried through pipes to a founta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The founta<strong>in</strong> was a large dolph<strong>in</strong> carved from st<strong>one</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

waters from <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g filled, with many pleasant murmurs,<br />

a bas<strong>in</strong> large enough to be called a pool. A multitude <strong>of</strong> gold<br />

fish flashed like liv<strong>in</strong>g jewels <strong>in</strong> this pool; some were blood-red<br />

with black tails <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong> variegated bits <strong>of</strong> life<br />

darted here <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y were as fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g to me as crown<br />

jewels could ever be. Curious st<strong>one</strong>s were set <strong>in</strong> rugged de-<br />

signs about <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a weep<strong>in</strong>g willow bent over until<br />

its sway<strong>in</strong>g branches touched <strong>the</strong> crystal water <strong>and</strong> brushed<br />

<strong>the</strong> snow-white water lilies that rested on <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pool. Rustic seats were placed about under <strong>the</strong> droop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tree, where visitors could rest <strong>and</strong> admire this garden <strong>of</strong> de-<br />

lights.<br />

To us it was an education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beautiful <strong>in</strong> art <strong>and</strong> nature.<br />

To w<strong>and</strong>er over <strong>the</strong> grounds could but suggest <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>and</strong><br />

culture <strong>of</strong> Mr. H<strong>of</strong>Fner, for <strong>the</strong>y were a storehouse <strong>of</strong> sculpture.<br />

Greek gods <strong>and</strong> goddesses glistened white amongst <strong>the</strong> trees.<br />

Mercury, with w<strong>in</strong>ged feet, was poised with <strong>one</strong> foot on <strong>the</strong><br />

pedestal <strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>in</strong> air, ready for flight; Pan with his pipes<br />

played underneath a bough; but now all were g<strong>one</strong>! It was<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r William who used to guide us through <strong>the</strong> grounds<br />

<strong>and</strong> tell us <strong>the</strong> stories <strong>of</strong> classical mythology represented <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> beautiful statuary <strong>the</strong>re. I missed <strong>the</strong> marble figures<br />

glanc<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> green, with someth<strong>in</strong>g like a pang <strong>of</strong><br />

heart.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> old days, three large greenhouses occupied a prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

place; <strong>one</strong> was reserved for cacti <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir rare <strong>and</strong><br />

grotesque forms; ano<strong>the</strong>r was for members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lily family<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r lovely flowers <strong>and</strong> plants; while <strong>the</strong> third was filled
