HOME BUILDING IN OHIO<br />

HEN <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents settled <strong>in</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was but <strong>one</strong> brick house <strong>in</strong> town, though<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were a number <strong>of</strong> small frame houses <strong>and</strong><br />

many cab<strong>in</strong>s. Their tarry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> settlement<br />

was not long, but it gave <strong>the</strong>m time for delibera-<br />

tion. As James Watk<strong>in</strong>s took a survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rugged hills <strong>and</strong> deep, dark forest l<strong>and</strong>s about<br />

<strong>the</strong> new town <strong>of</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati, he declared he would not give a<br />

cent an acre for all <strong>the</strong> rough l<strong>and</strong> about <strong>the</strong> new town site.<br />

He lived to see <strong>the</strong> rugged hills cleared <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir virg<strong>in</strong> forests<br />

<strong>and</strong> literally hewn down to level build<strong>in</strong>g spots, <strong>and</strong> he could<br />

not have bought <strong>the</strong> rejected l<strong>and</strong> had he covered it with silver<br />

dollars. They thus deliberated before <strong>the</strong>y selected a place to<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ohio was a heavily timbered country; <strong>the</strong> soil <strong>of</strong><br />

stiff yellow clay was well adapted to <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> walnut,<br />

beech, hickory, oak, ash, <strong>and</strong> maple, with an undergrowth <strong>of</strong><br />

pawpaw <strong>and</strong> elder bushes, <strong>and</strong> wild grapev<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> vigorous<br />

growth embower<strong>in</strong>g many a noble monarch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest. In<br />

this deep shade wild turkeys called to <strong>the</strong>ir flocks, while partridges<br />

drummed on <strong>the</strong> hollow logs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early h<strong>our</strong>s <strong>of</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

At night wolves howled, <strong>and</strong> occasionally a pan<strong>the</strong>r<br />

screamed, like a woman <strong>in</strong> distress. Sometimes, we are told,<br />

<strong>the</strong> early settlers had to snatch a blaz<strong>in</strong>g firebr<strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong><br />
