OVER THE MOUNTAINS 57<br />

flowers at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrow skirt was a brocade woven<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> material. I Hke to fancy <strong>our</strong> httle mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> those<br />

gowns, with her dark brown hair <strong>and</strong> eyes, her clear complexion<br />

<strong>and</strong> red cheeks. Long afterwards old Mrs. Dill was wont to<br />

tell Sister Ida <strong>and</strong> me how much prettier was <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> her daughters. Illness <strong>and</strong> labors manifold left <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

marks on <strong>the</strong> sweet complexion, but those s<strong>of</strong>tly sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g eyes<br />

did not lose <strong>the</strong>ir beauty.<br />

As soon as she began to earn m<strong>one</strong>y she also began to save<br />

it to buy her parents a home. She used as her safety deposit<br />

bank a large, empty Mason's Black<strong>in</strong>g box, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> this she<br />

placed her earn<strong>in</strong>gs until she had enough to buy a small farm<br />

<strong>of</strong> perhaps ten or twelve acres. This little farm lot was<br />

situated on Snow Hill <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whitewater Hills, not far from<br />

Harrison, Ohio, but <strong>in</strong> Indiana. She built with her careful<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>gs a hewn log house, but it was her ambition to replace<br />

it with a larger frame <strong>one</strong>, <strong>and</strong> so <strong>the</strong> Mason Black<strong>in</strong>g box<br />

began to receive co<strong>in</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong>. When <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> her sav<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

began to warrant <strong>the</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a new <strong>and</strong> better house<br />

her elder bro<strong>the</strong>r, William, asked a loan, <strong>and</strong> was given <strong>the</strong><br />

sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> black<strong>in</strong>g box. Later when she<br />

suggested <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount, that she might carry out<br />

her orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>tention, he only laughed <strong>and</strong> said he had never<br />

expected to return <strong>the</strong> loan; nor did he ever do so. Our dear<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r did not dwell upon this disappo<strong>in</strong>tment nor allow its<br />

<strong>in</strong>justice to embitter her.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> c<strong>our</strong>se <strong>of</strong> time <strong>in</strong> some way, by her <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>the</strong><br />

hewn logs <strong>of</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r Keeler's house were wea<strong>the</strong>rboarded<br />

<strong>and</strong> it was well plastered with lime <strong>in</strong>side, mak<strong>in</strong>g a good home<br />

for <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents. Even as late as 1896 it was still st<strong>and</strong>-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> is to us yet a monument <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's filial piety.<br />

As I recall this little house I seem to see <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, that<br />

quiet, little old man, com<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> door with a lot <strong>of</strong> spl<strong>in</strong>t<br />

baskets, <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> cous<strong>in</strong>s. Aunt Julia Ann's children, help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him up with his load to <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> his old bay horse, called<br />

"Old Blaze" because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blaze <strong>of</strong> white <strong>in</strong> his face, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aged basket-maker for some near-by town<br />

— himself, his crutches <strong>and</strong> his Wares, all on horseback. Our
