SCHOOL AND COLLEGE DAYS 153<br />

<strong>in</strong> a little marsh near by, where many frogs dispensed <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

music from early spr<strong>in</strong>g until <strong>the</strong> pond froze over <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

<strong>and</strong> became a slid<strong>in</strong>g place, which made a lot <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e fun for us<br />

all. One summer day, when <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows were all open <strong>and</strong><br />

Bill Roebuck's d<strong>in</strong>ner basket was sett<strong>in</strong>g carelessly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow, along came old Mo<strong>the</strong>r Hog <strong>and</strong>, quietly tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>of</strong> Bill's basket <strong>in</strong> her mouth, she rushed <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong> great<br />

haste. In this emergency <strong>the</strong> teacher gave us all permission<br />

to give chase, which we embraced with alacrity. Bill lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> hot haste. The whole school ran pell-mell, until <strong>the</strong> hog<br />

dropped <strong>the</strong> basket to ga<strong>in</strong> time. The d<strong>in</strong>ner was spoiled,<br />

but enough sympathy was created to cause <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r children<br />

to contribute toward Bill's d<strong>in</strong>ner, <strong>and</strong> he nor we did not<br />

leave <strong>our</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner baskets <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Some <strong>one</strong> gave us a nice, large, strong rope, from which we<br />

made a sw<strong>in</strong>g that was a never-fail<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>our</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> amusement.<br />

I do not remember that any<strong>one</strong> ever quarreled over this sw<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The locust tree from which it was suspended was <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>d said by many to attract lightn<strong>in</strong>g. It is true that it was<br />

struck several times <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> top badly broken, but <strong>the</strong> great,<br />

strong limb where <strong>our</strong> sw<strong>in</strong>g hung, <strong>and</strong> which leaned over <strong>the</strong><br />

bank, rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>tact, so we used it after <strong>the</strong> beautiful top was<br />

denuded.<br />

This church <strong>and</strong> schoolhouse comb<strong>in</strong>ed must have been<br />

built about 1838, <strong>and</strong> did service for some eighteen <strong>years</strong>,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> hill began to settle <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> foundations gave way, so<br />

that a great crack appeared which cont<strong>in</strong>ued to widen until<br />

it became necessary to place a heavy brace <strong>and</strong> wide board<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> corner for support. Later, <strong>and</strong> after we had left<br />

Ohio, <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was taken down <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bricks were used to<br />

erect a smaller church on <strong>the</strong> level place <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g — <strong>the</strong> spot which had once been <strong>our</strong> playground.<br />

The rebuild<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> free church was <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

community. Ano<strong>the</strong>r schoolhouse for <strong>our</strong> district had been<br />

built before, however, where we too attended school. The<br />

district bought an acre <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> north end <strong>of</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

farm <strong>and</strong> built a neat frame build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re. A son <strong>of</strong> old<br />

Mr. Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs had <strong>the</strong> contract for this new build<strong>in</strong>g. Young
