222 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

<strong>in</strong> various places say that <strong>in</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secession <strong>of</strong> Kentucky<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would be ru<strong>in</strong>ed. We heard o<strong>the</strong>rs talk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> possi-<br />

bility <strong>of</strong> cannon be<strong>in</strong>g placed over on <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty hills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kentucky side, from which po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> vantage C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati could<br />

easily be wiped out. Mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> I kept <strong>our</strong> nerve <strong>and</strong> made<br />

<strong>our</strong> purchases. We went <strong>in</strong>to a ch<strong>in</strong>a store <strong>and</strong> selected my<br />

dishes. She bought for me a full set <strong>of</strong> what was <strong>the</strong>n new<br />

ware <strong>and</strong> called st<strong>one</strong> ch<strong>in</strong>a; it was pure white. There were<br />

a dozen each <strong>of</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner, breakfast <strong>and</strong> pie plates, as we called<br />

bread <strong>and</strong> butter plates, besides cups <strong>and</strong> saucers, sauce dishes,<br />

meat platters, deep dishes, tureens, <strong>and</strong> all complete. The tea<br />

cups were better than <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary, because <strong>the</strong>y had h<strong>and</strong>les.<br />

T<strong>in</strong>ware, knives <strong>and</strong> forks, a set <strong>of</strong> plated spoons, <strong>and</strong> best<br />

<strong>of</strong> all a sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g britannia teapot were added to my outfit. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> last mo<strong>the</strong>r took up <strong>the</strong> teapot, really h<strong>and</strong>some <strong>in</strong> design<br />

<strong>and</strong> like polished silver, <strong>and</strong> asked me if I would like to have<br />

that. I at once replied that I should be delighted, <strong>and</strong> so she<br />

ordered it packed. How pleased I was; <strong>and</strong> though <strong>the</strong> polish<br />

is g<strong>one</strong> <strong>and</strong> it shows wear, I cherish it yet, <strong>and</strong> recall that time<br />

<strong>of</strong> youth when <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> my dear mo<strong>the</strong>r held up its pretty,<br />

silvered surface to catch <strong>the</strong> light, while outside <strong>the</strong> soldiers <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Union were drill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets. Little did we dream<br />

what would be <strong>the</strong> fate <strong>of</strong> my wedd<strong>in</strong>g dishes selected so care-<br />

fully that day <strong>in</strong> '6i. We also bought for my outfit musl<strong>in</strong>,<br />

table cloths, towels, <strong>and</strong> sixteen rolls <strong>of</strong> cotton batt<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

latter for comforters.<br />

When all <strong>our</strong> purchases were f<strong>in</strong>ished we found <strong>the</strong>y<br />

amounted to about <strong>fifty</strong> dollars, <strong>and</strong> oh, my young relatives,<br />

I felt rich that day, <strong>and</strong> satisfied! The merchant had securely<br />

packed my dishes <strong>in</strong> hay <strong>in</strong> a barrel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

purchases were loaded <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> army wagon. It was just all<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe could do to keep <strong>the</strong> horses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> road; he held<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es with all his might until we left beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> turmoil<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. It was even<strong>in</strong>g when we drove through <strong>the</strong> front<br />

gate <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> orchard, where we were glad to unload. We<br />

found that <strong>the</strong> dish pack<strong>in</strong>g had been a success <strong>and</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was broken.<br />

After that trip to C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati <strong>the</strong>re was a busy time gett<strong>in</strong>g
