1 82 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

est<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>and</strong> typical <strong>of</strong> a prosperous, old-fashi<strong>one</strong>d home.<br />

To me it seemed a regular "old curiosity shop." There we<br />

found three or f<strong>our</strong> flax wheels — those small, low wheels —<br />

also big, high wheels for sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g woolen yarn, reels for w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

thread, <strong>and</strong> all appliances for <strong>the</strong> domestic art <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> weav<strong>in</strong>g so well known to <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>rs. I remember to<br />

have seen <strong>the</strong> remnant <strong>of</strong> an old loom up <strong>the</strong>re upon which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wove, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long ago, those wonderful coverlids. What<br />

works <strong>of</strong> art <strong>the</strong>y were where <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>rs wove <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

long<strong>in</strong>gs for home decoration! What houses, trees <strong>and</strong> flowers<br />

grew with <strong>the</strong>ir swiftly fly<strong>in</strong>g shuttles! They wove <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

names <strong>and</strong> perhaps <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir accompHshment upon <strong>the</strong><br />

borders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se coverlids. They were mostly blue <strong>and</strong> white<br />

or madder red <strong>and</strong> white; all <strong>the</strong> colors were <strong>of</strong> domestic mak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> each woman had her dye-pot for color<strong>in</strong>g large quantities<br />

<strong>of</strong> yarn. I can remember <strong>our</strong>s, from which mo<strong>the</strong>r would<br />

take as much as a tubful <strong>of</strong> yarn at a time. Much <strong>in</strong>genuity<br />

was required <strong>in</strong> housekeepers <strong>of</strong> those days — <strong>in</strong>genuity <strong>and</strong><br />

skill; each home was a little factory.<br />

The Morris mo<strong>the</strong>rs for generations had been known for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir thrift <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old attic it did not require great stretch<br />

<strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation to picture Gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r Benjam<strong>in</strong> Morris before<br />

a blaz<strong>in</strong>g, open fire, <strong>one</strong> foot on <strong>the</strong> cradle rocker, rock<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her son Isaac to sleep, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> treadle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

wheel, while with her free h<strong>and</strong>s she drew <strong>the</strong> fiber from <strong>the</strong><br />

distaff". All this time her m<strong>in</strong>d was free to plan her work, <strong>and</strong><br />

so mentally, we fancy, she counted <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> towels, l<strong>in</strong>en<br />

sheets <strong>and</strong> pillow cases she would need for <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g spr<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

She must also sp<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e thread for her sew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> card <strong>and</strong><br />

sp<strong>in</strong> wool for stock<strong>in</strong>g yarn as well as for <strong>the</strong> flannel <strong>and</strong> cloth<br />

for full<strong>in</strong>g she must weave. I imag<strong>in</strong>e, too, that as she spun<br />

she studied on what colors would be best for <strong>the</strong> girls' dresses<br />

<strong>and</strong> her own. Besides, she must plan for a lot <strong>of</strong> blankets <strong>and</strong><br />

coverlids. These latter she th<strong>in</strong>ks she will make with a border<br />

<strong>of</strong> p<strong>in</strong>e trees; <strong>the</strong> center will be ei<strong>the</strong>r flowers or stars.<br />

The wheels were all silent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> attic, but <strong>the</strong>y spoke <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrious life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Morris mo<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>and</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g back<br />

over all <strong>the</strong> <strong>years</strong> we recall that she died <strong>of</strong> exhaustion at <strong>the</strong>
