HOME BUILDING IN MINNESOTA 227<br />

much that was new <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g. I had never seen prairie<br />

country before; it had been burned over <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> blades <strong>of</strong> green<br />

grass were spr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> black surface, <strong>in</strong>terspersed with<br />

wild flowers, noticeably <strong>the</strong> little woolly Easter blossoms which<br />

<strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g spr<strong>in</strong>gtimes I <strong>of</strong>ten saw show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir delicate color<br />

through a blanket <strong>of</strong> snow. Gophers <strong>and</strong> little striped squirrels<br />

were frisk<strong>in</strong>g about; <strong>the</strong> jack oaks were com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to bud. I<br />

could but th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> warm spr<strong>in</strong>g day we left C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati —<br />

<strong>the</strong> little apples form<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> orchard trees <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> loaded<br />

bushes <strong>of</strong> lilac <strong>and</strong> snowball. It was a pleasure, though, to<br />

see <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g com<strong>in</strong>g a second time that year. At St. Francis<br />

we found but a store <strong>and</strong> a post <strong>of</strong>fice besides lumber <strong>and</strong> fl<strong>our</strong><br />

mills. My husb<strong>and</strong>'s parents were <strong>in</strong>firm, especially <strong>the</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, he be<strong>in</strong>g afflicted with rheumatism. They received<br />

me with expressions <strong>of</strong> parental k<strong>in</strong>dness. My two younger<br />

sisters-<strong>in</strong>-law, Elm<strong>in</strong>a <strong>and</strong> Orl<strong>in</strong>da, were at home, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r next older than Alvah was <strong>the</strong> stay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, Levi<br />

Frost.<br />

We went to housekeep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a little deserted claim shanty<br />

which was at least clean <strong>and</strong> cozy, a good place to camp out<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> warm months. Early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>the</strong> defeat<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union forces at Bull Run made th<strong>in</strong>gs look quite dark.<br />

About midsummer, on a Sunday, we were tak<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>in</strong>ner with<br />

<strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> church friends when word came that a man from<br />

Ohio had arrived <strong>in</strong> St. Francis. We made haste to see who<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ohio man could be, <strong>and</strong> as we waded along through <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>and</strong> I saw, over <strong>the</strong> tops <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brush, a tall silk hat. I knew<br />

at once that it was Bro<strong>the</strong>r William. What joy! I was glad<br />

we had a bed for him <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> little home. How we did visit!<br />

It was s<strong>and</strong>y about St. Francis, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> soil was th<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

crops uncerta<strong>in</strong>; so hear<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> V<strong>and</strong>ervorts <strong>of</strong> a better<br />

place on <strong>the</strong> west side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mississippi <strong>in</strong> Stearns County,<br />

we determ<strong>in</strong>ed to move <strong>the</strong>re. It was about sixty miles distant<br />

from St. Francis, <strong>and</strong> we drove over. A neighbor, Hugh<br />

Wiley, whom Mr. Frost first knew <strong>in</strong> Ohio, lent us a little white<br />

pony <strong>and</strong> a buggy, <strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong> bright autumn morn<strong>in</strong>g we three<br />

started out with <strong>our</strong> lunch basket packed, ready for new scenes<br />

<strong>and</strong> experiences.
