THE OLD FARM 79<br />

declared himself liettor <strong>and</strong> was out <strong>in</strong> tlie yard <strong>and</strong> under <strong>the</strong><br />

trees all through <strong>the</strong> long days. The <strong>the</strong>me <strong>in</strong> those days<br />

about <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r's table was church union <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> triumph <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel over all barriers. The hospitality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> times was<br />

simple <strong>and</strong> warm, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> table-talk has<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenced my whole life to better th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In a few weeks Dr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Gatchell returned to <strong>the</strong> city<br />

with many expressions <strong>of</strong> gratitude. This is but <strong>one</strong> <strong>in</strong>stance<br />

where <strong>our</strong> parents opened <strong>the</strong>ir home to <strong>the</strong> afflicted "without<br />

m<strong>one</strong>y <strong>and</strong> without price." Surely those were days <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>cere<br />

Christian hospitality, when it was <strong>of</strong>ten said, "How <strong>the</strong>se<br />

Christians love <strong>one</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r!" We considered it a happy day<br />

when fa<strong>the</strong>r would br<strong>in</strong>g home a carriage load <strong>of</strong> preachers<br />

from a convention. How I loved to hear <strong>the</strong>m tell <strong>of</strong> Walter<br />

Scott <strong>and</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er Campbell <strong>and</strong> see such men as Jasper<br />

Moss <strong>and</strong> H. R. Pritchard, giants <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> childhood! I remember<br />

on <strong>one</strong> occasion f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g Bro<strong>the</strong>r Challen <strong>and</strong> Benjam<strong>in</strong><br />

Frankl<strong>in</strong> at breakfast when I came to <strong>the</strong> table. I can yet<br />

remember those strong preachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

looked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir prime. A description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farm <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />

home <strong>the</strong>re would not be complete without a mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong><br />

honored guests who brought to us so much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong><br />

thought.<br />

Our C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati relatives always seemed <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> us,<br />

<strong>and</strong> would <strong>of</strong>ten stop to see us on <strong>the</strong>ir way to Hamilton to visit<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family. Among <strong>the</strong> <strong>one</strong>s who visited<br />

us was fa<strong>the</strong>r's cous<strong>in</strong>, Mary Scudder, who married Elijah<br />

Norton, <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first ice men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. It always pleased<br />

us to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir carriage hitched <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> gate. They<br />

had a daughter, Joanna Norton Hawk, who was a neighbor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s on <strong>the</strong> north. Her husb<strong>and</strong> was capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> a steamboat<br />

ply<strong>in</strong>g between C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati <strong>and</strong> New Orleans <strong>and</strong> was a<br />

man <strong>of</strong> some wealth. Dear Mrs. Norton <strong>of</strong>ten visited her<br />

daughter, <strong>and</strong> I remember to have called at Joanna Hawk's<br />

<strong>one</strong> day when her mo<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong>re. Joanna <strong>and</strong> I were gath-<br />

er<strong>in</strong>g flowers when <strong>the</strong> dear old lady came out with a britannia<br />

teapot <strong>in</strong> her h<strong>and</strong>, which she was polish<strong>in</strong>g with a s<strong>of</strong>t piece
